political crack monkies

ya, my 8th grade crack monkies are actually paying attention to the primaries--b/c there is a person of color and a woman running. i don't know that they would be paying attention otherwise. they actually asked me to stop the lesson of the day to discuss the latest primary news!...and i did. the monroe doctrine also has the more observant ones on a rampage. their racial/cultural/political indignation/awareness is rewarding. however...they really could pay more attention when they read. that aspect of teaching is depressing on a regular basis. i gave the lyrics to "the battle of new orleans" w/out the title and asked them to answer some questions based on the lyrical content. one of the questions was about which event in the song is definitely fictitious: the correct answer is the alligator being used as a cannon and yet...oof!

Congratulations.  I think it is great that they are paying attention to politics, for ANY reason.  I hope you can help them see how important History is in their futures.  They need to pay attention to it so they don't make the same mistakes themselves.  Good Job.

yeah, i was so happy for them! i know it really has nothing to do with me...altho i would like to think that my passion for this topic and for presenting as many sides and points of view as possible w/an emphasis on those sides they can relate to has helped spur their fervor. i just hope they keep up with it--for their lifetimes.

I just have to say (sorry) but monkeys does not change the y to i because it is preceded by a vowel.  Again, sorry.
