ya, my 8th grade crack monkies are actually paying attention to the primaries--b/c there is a person of color and a woman running. i don't know that they would be paying attention otherwise. they actually asked me to stop the lesson of the day to discuss the latest primary news!...and i did.
the monroe doctrine also has the more observant ones on a rampage. their racial/cultural/political indignation/awareness is rewarding.
however...they really could pay more attention when they read. that aspect of teaching is depressing on a regular basis. i gave the lyrics to "the battle of new orleans" w/out the title and asked them to answer some questions based on the lyrical content. one of the questions was about which event in the song is definitely fictitious: the correct answer is the alligator being used as a cannon and yet...oof!
