and party every day! first iron maiden, now metallica. it wouldn't have to be metallica, but that is the version of the song i am most familiar w. and what i think will get the students' attention. not that they are into metal, most of them(i love my tiny blonde rocker boy. iz so cccccccccuuuuuuuuuttttttttttteeeeeeeeee!!!). i will probably find one or more other versions as well. the song is whiskey in the jar--to go with the highway man by alfred noyes. which i love!
i forgot to use know your rights when i taught the bill of rights and i still haven't played any rage or anything else for 8th grade. did play battle of new orleans by johnny horton--they freaked! country/folk is NOT a genre they are aurally comfortable with. some of these kids have an extremely limited exposure to anything other than the music--mainly the commercial hip-hop on the radio/mtv--of themselves and maybe something their peers listen to. its kinda freaky. but then, while i was exposed to a variety of musical styles growing up, i swore i was into rock only and would never listen to rap/hip-hop when i was in 8th grade....and i went to rock the bells this summer, so yeah, things have changed. my ipod currently holds about half hip-hop, mainly immortal technique.
